Spotlight: My Long Fight for Affordable Childcare in Westminster

Politicians don’t just receive hate mail. Here are some messages from two residents over the past month that made me smile:
Important Announcements
Big Announcement: After 5 months of EMS training (as part of my firefighter journey) I have now graduated with a 4.0 GPA, passed the national exam and am now officially a certified EMT, protecting you through policy and on the front lines. Thank you to this community for holding me up while I got trained in trauma assessment, geriatric care, obstetric emergencies, airway management, cardiac interventions, behavioral crises, rapid triage and high-pressure decision-making. Next steps TBD!!
Special shoutout: One of the best coffee shops in the north metro area, A Creative Corner (on 3965 W. 73rd Avenue), participated in the annual Bev Capra Spring Artisan Market that was held yesterday, May 17th from 9-3. All other shops were also open, such as YMR Train Shoppe and Banana Goat Apothecary. Unfortunately I was unable to attend due to prior commitments but I heard it was an amazing event, as always. Please make sure to visit all of those shops on 73rd!!
Support my re-election to City Council with a donation and reply to this email if you’d like to help volunteer for me. I love you all.
Free Summer Lunch Program: From May 27th - August 1st at City Park Rec Center, Swim and Fitness Center, Countryside Pool, Westminster Sports Center and McFall Park. Over the past 10 years, Westminster’s Parks, Recreation and Libraries department in partnership with Westminster Public Schools have provided 192K breakfasts and 330K free, nutritious meals.
Universal Preschool in Westminster: Starting in 2025-26 school year, Westminster’s preschool program will partner with the State to offer Universal Preschool, expanding access to high-quality early education (for ages 3 to 5) for working families. My longtime fight for working families in Westminster has focused on birth to age 3, where the gaps are largest; this preschool expansion helps, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle. See the below spotlight about my long fight for affordable childcare in Westminster.
Trader Joe’s is coming soon! CBS News: “Nine months after announcing Trader Joe's would open a new store in Westminster, a city councilman has revealed when the store may open. Obi Ezeadi posted on Nextdoor that the building plans have been approved. The 25,000 square foot store will be at 92nd and Sheridan, between the Sierra and Golf Galaxy. Ezeadi says it's likely the store will open in late summer or early fall.”
2025 State Legislative session ended last week, so it’s time next week for my annual “Obi’s Top 5 Favorite Bills” from the Colorado State legislature. Hundreds of bills get passed, but only a small percentage meaningfully help working families, protect our rights, or move Colorado forward. Stay tuned for that wrap-up.
2026 City Budget: Also next week, I will continue my deep-dive into the big infrastructure investments we must make…and figure out how to pay for…in 2026. My personal goal is to ensure we do everything we can to invest in our infrastructure without raising any taxes on our residents. See my previous newsletter where I discussed how our Westminster city revenue works.
Armed Forces Day ceremony: On May 17, I attended our annual Armed Forces Day ceremony and made sure to shake nearly every attendee’s hand in gratitude for their service or their family’s sacrifice and read aloud on stage the names of those newly added to our Tribute Garden (a memorial honoring residents who served or gave their lives in the U.S. Armed Forces).
Westminster Open Space Dog Park: I spoke at the “Celebrate and Educate” event honoring the Guardians for adopting the site (meaning they’ve committed to caring for and beautifying this public space as part of the city’s Adopt-a-Place program). I’m proud of their advocacy and my role in helping protect this open space one year ago.
My Long Fight for Affordable Childcare in Westminster
I’ve spent years advocating at the municipal level to make childcare a priority. The irony was not lost on me when, on April 28, I had to attend our City Council meeting virtually. I was supposed to present a proclamation declaring May 9 as Childcare Provider Appreciation Day. But my wife was out of the country for work, and I couldn’t find affordable childcare for our daughter. For so many families, including mine, childcare is not a convenience. It is a lifeline.
Childcare is not just a family issue. It is an economic issue. When families cannot find or afford care, our whole community loses. When providers are underpaid and overworked, we all feel it.
Many Westminster families lack access to licensed childcare, a key barrier to workforce retention, due to shortages in providers, early educators, and the wages needed to sustain full staffing and capacity.
In February 2025, I finally secured a major step forward. Council directed staff to compile a comprehensive set of municipal solutions to address access, quality, and cost of childcare in Westminster. The work is still underway, and I am excited to see the results.
I am proud to share the proclamation below, and even prouder to keep fighting for a future where every family and every provider can thrive:
“Whereas, The Early Childhood Partnership of Adams County, the Triad Early Childhood Council, and other organizations nationwide are recognizing Child Care Providers on this day; and
Whereas, the child care system supports children's growth, development, and educational advancement and creates a positive economic impact for families and communities; and
Whereas, Child Care Providers are essential to the health of our communities by fostering welcoming spaces, supporting working families, and creating positive, enriching environments where children can develop lifelong skills; and
Whereas, Westminster recognizes that child care has been and continues to be a lifeline for families, communities, and the economy and is often under-resourced and under-valued; and
Whereas, support for affordable, accessible high-quality child care represents a worthy commitment to help families work, support children's healthy development and learning, and keep our economy growing.
NOW, THEREFORE I, Nancy McNally, Mayor of the City of Westminster, on behalf of the entire City Council and Staff do hereby proclaim May 9th, 2025, as
PROVIDER APPRECIATION DAY
and call upon the people of Westminster to support Child Care Providers for their important work, and to recognize how valuable they are to our communities.
Signed this 28th day of April, 2025.”
