OFFICIAL STATEMENT
Regarding the 2024 Election Results
November 6, 2024
Westminster, CO - On November 5, 2024, Donald Trump won the U.S. Presidential election, buoyed by a multiracial working-class coalition of voters frustrated with high costs of gas, groceries and housing. Our divided political climate has strained our shared purpose, pulling us apart as a community, a state, and a nation—none of them perfect, but democracy makes them less imperfect and gives us the chance to keep improving together. I appreciate my friend, Rich Seymour, who recently reminded me that even I may have, at times, contributed to the divide through the language I sometimes use when supporting candidates and causes focused on fairness, economic security or opportunity. We are all susceptible and must hold ourselves accountable. I have three heartfelt requests for the residents of Westminster and all Coloradans:
Take care of yourself. I tend to think my way through emotions instead of feeling them—don’t do that. Allow yourself to experience feelings, knowing it’s OK to be both frustrated and empowered, optimistic yet upset, and angry while accepting things as they are.
Take care of each other. Hold leaders to a high standard, but approach neighbors, friends, family, and strangers with empathy. Heal each other’s wounds, be kind, and don’t gloat.
Take care of your community. Change happens closest to home:
Focus on Westminster. Recover, then reengage with your City Council - did you know we just passed a 2025 Budget that prioritizes economic security and preventative public safety? Shovel your neighbor’s driveways. Support local efforts and nonprofits - donate food to my 2nd Annual Westminster Food Drive; our goal is to feed 1,000 people this Thanksgiving.
Focus on Jefferson and Adams County. 57% of voters approved JeffCo Measure 1A to improve our roads, mental health, crime prevention, reduce wildfire risk and more. So, engage your local County Commissioners and ensure they spend those funds with transparency.
Focus on local elections. State government shapes critical aspects of life, from education and healthcare to public safety and infrastructure. Hold your local officials accountable and build local strength—City Council, County Commission, and others have the power to counterbalance federal actions and protect quality of life in Westminster and across Colorado.
